DTF Powder Shaker & Dryer: How It Works, Sizes, Prices & Setup (2026)

A DTF powder shaker is the machine that turns a wet DTF print into a finished transfer. It spreads hot-melt powder over the wet ink, shakes off the excess, then melts and cures the powder in a dryer. Whether you call it a powder shaker, a shaker and dryer, or a shaker oven, this guide covers how it works, which size fits your printer, what each machine costs, and how to set one up.

DTF powder shaker prices at a glance

  • 13" roll shaker for A3 printers: from $1,799 (Procolored)
  • Sheet-fed shaker oven: $2,999 (xTool, sheets up to 390 mm wide)
  • A3 printer + shaker bundle: $5,599 (Audley A3 + DF-300)
  • 24" (60 cm) shaker & dryer: $6,299 (Audley ADL07K12) or $8,999 (Audley ADL07K10, fully automatic)
  • Buy a 24" shaker with its printer: save up to $2,503 on the set

What does a DTF powder shaker do?

Your DTF printer lays down color and white ink on PET film, but the transfer won't stick to fabric until it has an adhesive layer. The shaker adds that layer in four steps:

  1. Powder: hot-melt adhesive powder is dropped over the film while the ink is still wet.
  2. Shake and recover: the film is vibrated so powder sticks only to the ink. Loose powder falls into a tray and is reused.
  3. Melt and cure: the film passes through a heated dryer, which melts the powder into a smooth adhesive layer.
  4. Collect: the finished film is rolled up or stacked, ready to press.

Done by hand, the same job means sprinkling powder, tapping off the excess and curing each sheet in an oven or under a heat press. That works for a few sheets a day, but not for a roll.

Shaker, dryer, shaker oven: what's the difference?

They describe the same job. "Powder shaker and dryer" is the usual name for roll-to-roll machines that sit in line with the printer: film feeds straight out of the printer, through the shaker and dryer, and onto a take-up roll without stopping. "Shaker oven" is often used for sheet-fed machines that take one cut sheet at a time, such as the xTool Automatic Shaker and Oven.

How film moves Continuous roll, straight from the printer One cut sheet at a time
Best for Gang sheets, long runs, unattended printing Desktop printers and short runs

Price range $1,799 to $8,999 About $3,000

Do you need a DTF powder shaker?

Manual powdering is enough when you print a few sheets a day on a desktop printer and can cure them in an oven or heat press. It is slower and messier, and results vary with how evenly you powder.

A shaker becomes essential when:

  • You print on a roll. A roll printer keeps printing while you sleep, and the shaker finishes the film as it comes out.
  • You sell gang sheets or wholesale transfers, where every hour of printing has to be powdered and cured.
  • You want consistent adhesion. Even powder and controlled curing temperature mean fewer transfers that peel after washing.
  • You want to waste less powder. Automatic recovery puts loose powder back in the hopper.

How to match a shaker to your printer

1. Width must match

The shaker has to take the full width of your film. A 13" (A3) printer needs a 13" shaker. A 24" printer needs a 60 cm shaker. A narrower shaker can't finish a wider print, and a much wider one wastes heat, space and money.

2. Speed must keep up

If the shaker is slower than the printer, film piles up between them. Compare the printer's speed in the mode you actually use with the shaker's rated speed:

  • A 2-head 24" printer prints up to 14 m²/h. The ADL07K12 handles up to 27 m²/h, so it has plenty of room.
  • 4- and 6-head printers print up to 26–28 m²/h. The ADL07K10 runs 5–30 m²/h with three heating zones, so it keeps curing quality up at full speed.

3. Roll or sheet

A roll-to-roll printer needs an inline roll shaker, or the film has to be cut and handled by hand. A sheet printer like the xTool DTF Apparel Printer pairs with a sheet-fed shaker oven.

Space, power and ventilation

  • Space: 24" shakers are big. The ADL07K10 is about 88 × 37 × 37 in (2.2 × 0.94 × 0.95 m) and weighs 683 lb (310 kg). The ADL07K12 weighs 534 lb (242 kg). Measure your doorway and floor space before delivery, and leave room for film to run from the printer straight into the shaker.
  • Power: the Audley shakers run on 220V. Plan a dedicated circuit for the shaker, separate from the printer. The ADL07K10 can draw up to 4,000 W.
  • Ventilation: curing powder gives off fumes. The ADL07K12 has built-in triple-stage air filtration. For other machines, vent the exhaust outside or pair the shaker with an air purifier.
  • Room conditions: powder clumps in humid air. Keep the room dry and at a steady temperature, and store powder sealed.

What a DTF shaker costs to run

Beyond the machine price, budget for:

  • Powder: premium DTF hot-melt powder is $19.99 per kg. Shakers with powder recovery reuse the excess, so you only use what sticks to the ink.
  • Electricity: the dryer is the biggest draw. Running power is about 800 W on the ADL07K12 and 2,200–3,000 W on the ADL07K10.
  • Maintenance: empty the recovery tray, clean powder dust from the belt and sensors, and check the heating tubes regularly.

Common shaker problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause Fix
Powder sticks outside the design Static on the film, or humid powder Lower humidity, use an anti-static bar or ionizer, keep powder sealed
Patchy powder on the print Ink already dry, or uneven powder feed Keep the shaker close to the printer and check the powder hopper level
Grainy, sandy finish Under-cured powder Raise the temperature slightly or slow the film
Yellowing or bubbling Over-curing Lower the temperature or speed up the film
Transfers peel after washing Too little powder or incomplete curing Check powder coverage and curing temperature, then press time and pressure

FAQ

How much does a DTF powder shaker cost?

At DTF Gears, a 13" roll shaker starts at $1,799, the xTool sheet-fed shaker oven is $2,999, and 24" (60 cm) shakers cost $6,299 (Audley ADL07K12) or $8,999 (Audley ADL07K10). Buying a 24" shaker in a set with its printer saves up to $2,503.

Is a shaker and dryer the same as a shaker oven?

They do the same job: powder, shake off the excess, then melt and cure. "Shaker and dryer" usually means a roll-to-roll machine in line with the printer. "Shaker oven" usually means a sheet-fed machine that takes one cut sheet at a time.

Can I use any powder shaker with any DTF printer?

The shaker must take your film width and keep up with your printer's speed. A 13" printer needs a 13" shaker, a 24" printer needs a 60 cm shaker, and a roll printer needs a roll-fed shaker.

What temperature should a DTF shaker dryer run at?

It depends on the machine and powder. The Audley ADL07K12 dries at 90–120 °C, the ADL07K10 runs 100–150 °C across three zones, and xTool recommends 130 °C for its shaker oven. Start at the maker's setting and adjust if the finish is grainy (too cool) or yellow (too hot).

Can I apply DTF powder by hand?

Yes, for a few sheets a day. Sprinkle powder on the wet print, tap off the excess and cure it in an oven or under a heat press. For roll printing, gang sheets or daily production, an automatic shaker is faster and gives more even results.

Do 24-inch DTF shakers need 220V?

Yes. Both Audley 60 cm shakers run on 220V and should have their own dedicated circuit.
